Junior Book & Author Literary Focus

Our Commitment to Literacy

The Junior League of Richmond (JLR) serves children and families in low-income communities by providing trained volunteers and programs that are focused on the improvement of our community. Through the years, the JLR has provided various community programs that encompass our commitment to improving literacy in our more challenged neighborhoods. Such programs have included Wonder on Wheels, a signature project that provided an academic-based literacy component and Standards of Learning – (SOL) enrichment program in two Richmond Public Schools, and our current Literacy Through Art Outreach project, where JLR committee members serve as "ambassadors" for the Children's Museum of Richmond by identifying community links and coordinating workshops where Junior League volunteers can take the magic of the museum directly to community centers and schools in Metro Richmond.

In 2005, the Junior League of Richmond celebrated its 60th year of hosting the Annual Book & Author Dinner.  The oldest, continuously running event of its kind in the country, the Book & Author Dinner brings authors and readers together for an evening of insightful discussion, and the opportunity for patrons to meet and visit with the authors during a post-dinner book signing.  In an effort to expand its literacy efforts to include our younger constituents, the JLR hosted its first Junior Book & Author literary event at the Byrd Theater that year, featuring award-winning author Avi.  Junior Book & Author was developed with the intent of reaching out to our middle-school children, a demographic that often lacks special literacy efforts by many other literacy organizations and programs.  The JLR’s intent is to foster a child’s love of reading by providing the unique opportunity to learn about and visit with an author through personal school visits, Chat ‘n’ Chew book clubs, and our annual Be a Junior Author writing competition.  Revenue that is raised from this event supports our mission of developing the potential of women and supporting our community.
