2710 Monument Avenue

The History of 2710 Monument Avenue

Exciting News!  The Board of Directors of the Junior League of Richmond is pleased to announce that we have successfully closed on the sale of 2710 Monument Avenue on October 30, 2009.  Click here for more details.

In 1957, the Junior League of Richmond volunteers started the Senior Center. In 1967, the JLR donated 2710 Monument Avenue to the already established non-profit Senior Center of Richmond. When we gave the building to that non-profit, we had a clause in the deed stating if the building ceased being a senior center, the ownership of the building would come back to the Junior League of Richmond. That is exactly what happened on August 1st, 2006 (when the former entity known as The Senior Center of Richmond dissolved) and the ownership of 2710 Monument Avenue returned to the JLR. This building is currently home to a Senior Center, A Community Partnership. A consortium of community organizations pooled their resources to reopen the doors at 2710 Monument Avenue for senior programming.

The synergy of the partners combined with the level of effort and passion by each has been wonderful to watch. As a result of community support and much hard work metro-Richmond seniors are being served at 2710 Monument Avenue. For now, Senior Connections, The Capital Area on Aging is in charge of operations and Yinestra Robinson with Senior Connections runs the center, coordinate donations and volunteers, and programming. Many of the services offered to seniors include exercise classes, chorus, cards and games, foreign language and dance classes. Also, monthly trips, health screenings, and art classes are offered.

Currently, 2710 Monument Avenue has a lease with Senior Connection so the building may continue to be used to serve metro-Richmond seniors. To date, The Junior League of Richmond has spent over $25,000 in utilities and building repairs on the building.

The responsibility for managing the property is in the very capable hands a JLR member, Polly Brickman.

The Junior League of Richmond, and Senior Connections, The Capital Area on Aging, joined forces to ensure the seniors that were served at 2710 Monument Avenue would continue to receive their much needed programs.

The Boards of Directors at both organizations have been extremely supportive and have committed financial, personnel resources and volunteer hours to ensure a successful reopening of senior services at 2710 Monument Avenue.

A very special thank you to the other partners that have helped in revitalizing senior services: Bon Secours, Dominion, VCU Department of Gerontology, The William Byrd Community House, The City of Richmond, The United Way of Greater Richmond, AARP, Home Depot, and many others.
